There are many arguments as to why getting rid of unused files on your personal computer
is a good habit to get into. Your PC's speed, during file accesses is dependent upon,
amongst other things, the total number of all files stored there. This might seem
odd, but it makes sense when you realize that the file management core works harder
the drive system is subjected to more stress as the user needs to retrieve files.
Also keep in mind that as time goes on, fragmented files result and this reduces
the rate at which file data can be retrieved from disk. Data security is also a factor,
when you have a large number of your personal data files, there is always a chance
that somebody else using your PC might misuse your personal information. Regularly
cleaning out your hard drives can give us back space which can then be put to other
uses.
There are many drive cleaners each of which will approach 'hard disk cleaning' from
varying perspectives. There is usually much is more that that these utilities are
able to do, some can perform drive 'washing', check the drive for porn and remove
it, discover and clean copyrighted material, and free space analysis.
You will need to pick one of two ways to do a hard drive clean; the first simply
involves manually reviewing files and folders for deletion, and there is the automatic
way. It can take longer but manual cleaning works by stepping through all drive areas
and choosing what files are no longer needed, and deleting them as necessary. There
is less chance of losing unwanted data than scanning the drive with software tools
but it can take some time. There are also automated programs that make delete/dont
delete decisions based on fields like the date files were last accessed, and then
automatically create lists of files for removal.
